Today I tried to join a beach volleyball game. I’ve always loved watching it, and recently I thought, “Why not give it a shot?” So I searched for some local games and found one happening nearby. I was pretty pumped to finally try it out.

I showed up at the beach, and wow, it was packed. There were tons of people playing, and everyone looked like they knew what they were doing. I started to feel a bit nervous, but I tried to stay positive. I found the group I was supposed to join and introduced myself. They were all super friendly, which helped calm my nerves a little.
We started with some warm-up drills. We practiced passing, setting, and spiking. I stumbled a lot at first. The sand made it so much harder to move around than I expected! I kept sinking in and losing my balance. And hitting the ball? Forget about it. I missed way more often than I connected. But I kept at it, trying to remember the tips I had read online.
Here’s what I focused on during the drills:
- Being ready to move: I tried to stay on the balls of my feet, ready to dive for any ball that came my way. This was tough because the sand made every movement feel like it took twice as much effort.
- Passing: I focused on getting my platform right, keeping my arms straight and angled towards the target. It was hard to control where the ball went, especially with the wind.
- Setting: I tried to get under the ball and use my fingertips to push it up high and soft for the spiker. Most of my sets ended up too low or too far from the net.
- Spiking: This was the most fun but also the hardest. I worked on my approach, jumping high, and hitting the ball with power. I managed to spike a few balls over the net, but most of them went out of bounds or straight into the net.
After the drills, we played a few games. I won’t lie, I was pretty bad. I messed up a lot of plays, and my team ended up losing most of the games. But even though I wasn’t very good, I still had a blast. Everyone was really encouraging, even when I made mistakes. They gave me tips and cheered me on, which made me feel like part of the group.
By the end of the day, I was exhausted and covered in sand, but I had a huge smile on my face. It was such a fun experience, even though I was terrible at it. I realized that beach volleyball is way harder than it looks, but it’s also super rewarding. I definitely want to keep playing and get better. Maybe one day I’ll actually be good enough to win a game!
