Today, I wanna talk about something that gets me pumped – beach volleyball games. I’ve always loved the beach, the sun, the sand, you name it. So, a few months back, I thought, why not combine that love with a bit of sport? That’s when I decided to get into beach volleyball.

First off, I had to find a place to play. Now, I live near the coast, so you’d think finding a beach wouldn’t be hard, right? Wrong! Not every beach has volleyball nets set up. After a bit of asking around and some driving, I found this sweet spot at Hermosa Beach. It’s popular, so there were always people playing. I started by just watching, trying to pick up the game by observing. This place is known for having some really good players, so it was like getting a free clinic!
The game, I learned, is played by two teams, two players each, on a sand court. The court’s a bit smaller than the indoor ones, and the net’s the same height – 2.24m for women and 2.43m for men, didn’t know that before! You gotta win two sets to win the match, which makes it pretty intense.
Finding games wasn’t too tough once I knew where to look. This place called King Louie’s has adult leagues, and they play all year round. That’s a commitment, right? There are also places like Volleyball Beach that seem to host games no matter the season. Spring, summer, fall, winter – they have it all. That’s where I really got my practice in, playing in these casual games they hosted.
I also found out that a lot of coastal cities have these sand volleyball courts set up near popular beaches. They’re usually first-come, first-serve, so you gotta get there early to snag a spot. I started going there with a buddy of mine, and we’d just play and practice. It was tough at first, running in the sand is no joke, but it got easier.
- Watching and Learning: I spent a good amount of time just watching games at Hermosa Beach. It helped me understand the flow and the rules.
- Joining Casual Games: Places like Volleyball Beach were great for getting actual game experience.
- Practicing: Grabbing a court at a public beach and practicing with a friend was key.
There’s also this thing called Volleyball World TV, or VBTV. It’s like a streaming service but just for volleyball. They have live matches, over 4000 of them, and even some behind-the-scenes stuff. It’s a bit much for me, but I guess if you’re super into it, it’s pretty cool.
So, that’s my journey into the world of beach volleyball. It’s been a blast, getting to play, meeting new people, and just enjoying the beach in a whole new way. If you’re near a beach and looking for a fun, active way to spend your time, I’d say give it a shot. Who knows, you might just love it as much as I do!
