So, I’ve always been a huge basketball fan. Played all through high school, a bit in college, you know the drill. But after college, life happened. Got a job, got married, had a kid. Suddenly, I realized I hadn’t touched a basketball in years. I missed the game, the competition, the camaraderie. I was feeling sluggish and just wanted to move my body again.

One day, I was scrolling through social media and saw an ad for an adult basketball league. I thought to myself, “Why not?” So, I started looking for a way to find a league for adults near me.
First Step: Searching
First, I searched all over the internet. I found some useful information. It mentioned that there’s this thing called AAU, which stands for the Amateur Athletic Union. I guess it’s a big organization that has all kinds of sports, not just basketball. It looks like there is something like 700,000 people playing and a lot more helping out.
Then there’s the NBA. I mean, who hasn’t heard of the NBA, right? I also found out that they have a minor league called the G League. That’s pretty cool, but I’m definitely not at that level anymore.
Second Step: Finding a League
I checked out a bunch of local community centers and gyms. Some of them had their own leagues. I called one place that had a “55 League” or something, where it’s just like a standard basketball game and you can hang out with your teammates after the game. It sounds nice, but it’s a bit too far from my place.
Third Step: Making a Decision
Finally, I stumbled upon a league that was close to me. The information said it was for people of all skill levels. Perfect! I filled out the registration form online, paid the fee, and just like that, I was in.
Fourth Step: Getting Back in Shape
I realized I couldn’t just jump back in. I hadn’t played in years. So, I started doing some basic drills in my backyard. Dribbling, shooting, you know, the basics. It was rough at first, but slowly, I started to get my rhythm back.

I also found out some programs like Ladies First AAU. It seems like a good place for girls and teenagers to practice, but I am neither of those.
I also started hitting the gym, working on my cardio and strength. It was tough, but I was determined to get back in shape.
Fifth Step: Playing Again
The first game was a bit of a disaster. I was rusty, out of breath, and my shots were way off. But you know what? It was still amazing. I was back on the court, playing the game I loved. The other guys were super supportive, even though I was clearly the weak link. But, I scored a few points, and it felt amazing.
Sixth Step: Enjoying the Benefits
Now, a few months in, I’m feeling great. I’m in better shape, I’ve made some new friends, and I’m having a blast. My kid even comes to watch my games sometimes, which is awesome. Joining this league was one of the best decisions I’ve made in a long time. It’s not just about the basketball, it’s about the whole experience. Feeling like part of a team again, pushing myself, and just having fun.
If you’re thinking about getting back into basketball, or any sport for that matter, I say go for it. It’s never too late. I did it!
