This year, my boy, he say, “Ma, you wanna be the commissioner in our fantasy football?” I say, what in tarnation is that? He say it like being the big boss, you know? I think, well, I am the boss of this family, so why not?

First thing, he tell me I gotta get everyone together. Ten folks playin’ this fantasy football thing. I call up everyone, like I always do for the family reunion. “Y’all gonna play this game with me,” I say. They all say yes. They know better than to say no to me, ha!
Getting Started with Fantasy Football
Then, my boy, he say we gotta do a draft. Now, I thought draft was just that cold wind sneakin’ under the door in winter. But no, it’s when you pick your players. We all got together at my place, had some pie, and started pickin’.
- First you pick a quarterback.
- Then some running backs.
- Wide receivers, they’re important.
- Don’t forget a tight end, whatever that is.
- A kicker, ’cause you gotta kick the ball.
- And a defense. You gotta have defense.
I didn’t know half these players. Some young fellas with names I can’t pronounce. But my boy, he helped me out. He knows his football. I just pick the ones with strong-sounding names. Gotta have a strong team, you know?
Setting the Rules
Next, I had to make some rules. My boy, he had a whole list of things. Like how many points you get for a touchdown. I say, “A touchdown is a touchdown! Six points!” Just like when I used to watch the games on that old black and white TV.
Then there was somethin’ about waivers and trades. I say, “What’s all this tradin’ business? You pick your team, you stick with ’em.” But they say it makes it more fun. So, I let ’em trade. But if someone try to pull a fast one, I’ll hear about it, you bet.
- Touchdowns are six points.
- Field goals are three points.
- You can trade players, but I’m watchin’ you.
- No cheatin’!
Keeping Everyone in Line
Now, bein’ commissioner ain’t all fun and games. You gotta make sure everyone follows the rules. Like that time when Jimmy tried to pick up a player he shouldn’t have. I had to put my foot down. “No sir,” I say. “Rules are rules.”

And then there was the money. Everyone had to chip in some cash. I kept it in my old cookie jar. Safe and sound. I ain’t trustin’ no bank with this kind of money. It’s for the winner, you see. Braggin’ rights and a little somethin’ extra.
The Fun Part of Fantasy Football
But it ain’t all about rules and money. It’s about havin’ fun. Every week, we all watch the games. We cheer for our players. We talk about who’s doin’ good and who’s not. It’s like a little community. A fantasy football family.
I even started to learn some of the lingo. Like PPR and flex. I still don’t know what half of it means, but it sounds important. And when my players do good, I feel like I won somethin’ too. Like when my quarterback threw for a whole bunch of yards. I was hootin’ and hollerin’ like it was the Super Bowl.
What I Learned as Commissioner
So, what have I learned bein’ this commissioner thing? Well, I learned that fantasy football is more than just a game. It’s about bringin’ people together. It’s about havin’ somethin’ to talk about. Somethin’ to get excited about.
It’s about family and friends. Even if they’re not your real family. It’s about bein’ part of somethin’. And it is kind like real football, you need choose your players, set the rules for your team. Sometimes there will have some problems, but you still need to solve it.
I also learned that I’m a pretty darn good commissioner. I keep everyone in line. I make sure the rules are followed. And I make sure everyone has a good time. I might not know all the fancy terms or all the players, but I know how to run a league. Just like I know how to run a family.

So, if you ever get asked to be a commissioner in one of these fantasy football things, I say go for it. It’s a lot of work, but it’s a lot of fun too. And who knows, you might just surprise yourself. You might find out that you’re a natural born leader. A commissioner of the gridiron, just like me. This is what I learned in this year.
And don’t you forget it. You gotta keep your eye on the ball. You gotta stay focused. And you gotta have fun. That’s what it’s all about. Bein’ a commissioner, it’s like bein’ the boss of your own little world. A world of touchdowns and field goals. A world of fantasy football. And in my world, I’m the queen. Long live the queen, ha!
