Yo, let’s talk ’bout this volleyball game thing, see? How many sets in a volleyball game? I heard folks talking, and it got me thinking. They say it ain’t just one round, no sir! It’s like, a whole bunch of ’em.

Now, in them fancy high school games, the varsity ones, and them college games, they go all out. They play five sets. Five! Can you believe it? It’s like, they just keep going and going.
- First team to get 25 points, they win a set.
- But, they gotta win by two. So, if it’s 24 to 24, they gotta keep playing. They call it a tie-breaker.
- They play till someone gets to 26, or 27, or whatever it takes.
Then the little ones, the JV and the Freshman, I heard they only play three sets, the best of three sets. Makes sense, they still learnin’, ain’t they? Don’t wanna wear ’em out too much.
And these club volleyball folks, they mostly do best of three, too. They just like to get them games done, then they can have some cookies.
So, five sets for the big shots, three for the little ones. That’s what I heard, anyway. But, you know, things change. Rules and such. Always changing.
Now, let’s say they play four sets, right? And each team wins two. Tied up! What then? Well, they play a fifth set. A tie-breaker set they call it. But this one’s shorter. Only gotta get 15 points to win this one.
Each set, it’s like a little game all by itself. One team hits that ball over the net, other team hits it back. Back and forth, back and forth. Till someone messes up, or someone hits it real good. Then, someone gets a point.

They keep going like that, till one team gets 25 points. Unless it’s that last set, the short one, then it’s 15. Gotta win by two, though. Always by two.
- So, 25 points wins most sets.
- 15 points wins that last, tie-breaker set.
- Always gotta win by two points.
It’s all about strategy, they say. And endurance. Whatever that means. Sounds like just plain ol’ being tough to me. Gotta be tough to play all them sets.
Sometimes, they play all five sets, and it takes forever. Other times, one team is just way better, and they win the first three, and it’s over quick. You never know.
This volleyball game, it is something. It’s not just a game, it is sets and sets of the game. Best of five, best of three, depends who you ask.
So, next time you hear folks talking ’bout volleyball, you can tell ’em what you know. Five sets for the big leagues, three for the others, usually. And that last set, the tie-breaker, that’s a short one, just 15 points. And always, gotta win by two. Always.

It’s a lot, I know. But that’s volleyball for ya. Sets and points and winning by two. It ain’t simple, but it sure is something to watch. If you ever get a chance to see a volleyball match, take it. It is more fun than playing Bingo.
I remember one time, I saw this game, and these girls, they were jumping and diving all over the place. One girl, she hit the ball so hard, I thought it was gonna pop! They were playing so many sets, I lost count after a while.
But they kept going, all the way to that last set, that 15-point one. And you know what? It was tied at 14 to 14! Can you imagine? They had to play till someone got to 16. It is important to win by 2 in this volleyball game.
And they did! One team, they finally got them two points, and they won the whole thing. It was something, I tell ya. Something to see.
So yeah, volleyball. Lots of sets. Lots of points. Gotta be tough. Gotta have that… endurance. And gotta win by two. That’s the way it is.
