Alright, let’s talk about this volleyball thing. Seems like a whole lotta fuss if you ask me, but my grandkids, they just love it. So, I tried to figure it out. It ain’t as easy as it looks, this rules of the game in volleyball.
First off, you gotta get that ball over that there net. You see that net? It’s right in the middle of the court. They hit the ball back and forth, these volleyball players. They jump and they dive, it’s a sight to see. Gotta whack that ball over the net, that’s the main thing, I reckon.
Now, they can’t just hold onto that ball, no sir. They gotta hit it. And they can only hit it so many times before it needs to go over. I think they said three times. Three hits, then over the net it goes. And you can use, you know, any part of your body. Not just your hands. Leg, head, whatever. Just gotta bounce it, like a rubber ball, not catch it and throw it, that’s no good.
- Hit that ball over the net.
- Only three hits, they told me.
- Use your whole body, if you need to.
- Don’t catch it, just bounce it.
And these players, they got their own spots on the court. They move around, like a little dance. One steps here, another one there. It’s a volleyball rule. They call it rotation, like the earth goes around the sun. Keeps things fair, I suppose. They all gotta take turns in each spot. These are some basic volleyball rules.
They got this thing called serving, too. That’s how they start it all up. One fella stands way back there, behind the line, and he whacks that ball. Gotta get it over the net, and gotta land it on the other side, in that other team’s area. If they don’t, the other guys get the point. That’s how volleyball scoring goes.
And points, oh boy, that’s a whole other thing. They get a point if the other team messes up. Like, if the ball hits the ground on their side, or if they hit it out of bounds. Like I said, it’s a volleyball game. Or if they hit it too many times. More than three, you see. Gotta keep track of those hits, those volleyball players.
These players, they wear these fancy outfits. Shorts and shirts, all matching. And they got these special shoes, too. Gotta have good shoes for all that jumping, I guess. Protect the feet, and these shoes can help them play volleyball better.
And they got all these hand signals, too. The coach, he’s always yelling and pointing. And the players, they talk to each other, point here, point there. It’s like a secret code, this volleyball game. They know what they’re doing, I reckon. They practice and practice, day in and day out.
There are these things called volleyball violations, too. You mess up, you break a rule. Like stepping over that line when you serve. That’s a no-no. Or touching the net, that’s another one. Gotta be careful with that net. And if you mess up too much, the other team, they get the point. Just like I said before, this is the volleyball rules.

- Don’t step over the line when serving.
- Don’t touch the net.
They got different players, too. Some are good at hitting it real hard. Some are good at getting to the ball, no matter where it goes. They all work together, like a team. A real volleyball team, not like a group of chickens running around with their heads cut off.
This volleyball, it’s a lot to take in. But I guess it’s fun for them young folks. Keeps them out of trouble, I suppose. Better than sitting around all day, staring at those phones. At least they’re moving, getting some exercise. And learning to work together, that’s important, too.
So, yeah, that’s volleyball for ya. A bunch of rules and running around. But hey, if it makes them happy, then I guess it’s alright. Just gotta keep that ball bouncing, and get it over that net. And don’t touch the net. And don’t step over the line. And only three hits. It’s a lot to remember, but they seem to get it. These kids today, they pick things up quick. The volleyball game, they just love it.
I still think it could use more cowbell, though.
