So, I’ve always been a dog person, you know? And I’ve had a few different breeds over the years, but I gotta say, getting into these Sporting Lucas Terriers has been a whole new ball game. I started with just one, figured I’d see how it went. I did some reading online, found a website called PuppyForSale or something, you know, one of those places where you can find breeders. I looked at some pictures, they were cute and small, I like that. I saw that these dogs are not super well-known, especially compared to other terriers, which I thought was kind of cool.

I picked out a puppy, a little female, and named her Daisy. She was a bundle of energy right from the start, but not in a bad way. I read that these dogs can be friendly but not overly submissive with strangers, and that’s exactly what Daisy was like. She was curious, always sniffing around, but not yappy like some small dogs can be. I saw some information that said they only bark for a good reason, and that’s been true for Daisy. I liked that the Lucas Terrier was created by some Major, and that they were bred from Sealyham and Norfolk Terriers. It gave them a cool backstory, you know?
Grooming and All That
I knew going in that these Sporting Lucas Terriers have a double coat, so there would be some grooming involved. I got myself a pin brush and a metal comb, just like some website suggested. It’s not too bad, though. I usually brush her once a week, just to keep her coat looking nice and to get rid of any tangles. It’s kind of a bonding thing for us, too.
Expanding the Pack
After a few months with Daisy, I was hooked. I decided to get another one, this time a male. I named him Buster. I was a little worried about how they would get along, but it was fine. I read that these dogs aren’t aggressive, and that’s been my experience. Buster is a bit more laid-back than Daisy, but they both love to play and explore. I noticed that they have short legs and a narrow chest, just like the descriptions I read online.
- First Puppy: Picked out a female puppy, named her Daisy.
- Initial Observations: Energetic, curious, not yappy, friendly but not submissive.
- Grooming Routine: Weekly brushing with a pin brush and metal comb.
- Second Puppy: Got a male puppy, named him Buster.
- Pack Dynamics: Dogs get along well, not aggressive.
Having these two Sporting Lucas Terriers has been a blast. They’re small, but they’ve got big personalities. They keep me active, they’re always up for an adventure, and they’re just fun to be around. If you’re looking for a small dog that’s not too demanding but still has a lot of spunk, I definitely recommend checking out these little guys. They are a recent breed to the terrier family, so I felt like I was getting in on something new and exciting. You may not know it’s for you, but it turned out to be perfect for me!
But you should know that it may not always be easy to find one in the first place, since they are not so popular yet.
