So, the other day, I got involved in this game called Newcomb. It’s kinda like volleyball, but instead of hitting the ball, you catch it and throw it. Sounded simple enough, right? Well, let me tell you, it was a bit more than I bargained for.
First off, we had to set up the court. We used the same net as volleyball, which was already there, thankfully. But then we had to figure out the teams. We ended up with about ten people, so we split into two teams of five. I was a little nervous ’cause I hadn’t played anything like this since I was a kid.
Getting the hang of it
- The game started with a serve, just like in volleyball. But here’s the twist: instead of hitting it back, the other team had to catch it.
- Then, they could pass it up to three times among their team before throwing it back over the net.
- We tried to keep the ball in play as long as possible, throwing it back and forth. It was surprisingly tiring!
I got to admit, I wasn’t very good at first. I dropped the ball a few times, and my throws weren’t always on target. But my teammates were cool about it. They kept encouraging me, and after a while, I started to get the hang of it.
Learning as we go
We didn’t really know all the rules, so we just made them up as we went along. Like, we decided that if the ball hit the ground, it was a point for the other team. And if someone caught it with one hand, it was a bonus point. I know, it sounds silly, but it was a lot of fun.
We played for about an hour, and by the end, we were all pretty exhausted but also kind of exhilarated. It was great to be outside, running around, and just having a good time with friends. I even managed to make a few good catches and throws towards the end, which felt awesome.
Honestly, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Newcomb. It’s a simple game, but it’s a lot more fun and challenging than it looks. Plus, it’s a great way to get some exercise without feeling like you’re actually working out. I’d definitely play it again, and who knows, maybe I’ll even get good at it someday! It is a really fun game, especially playing with friends!
