You wanna know ’bout volleyball game or match, huh? I heard them young folks talkin’ ’bout it the other day. They was goin’ on and on ’bout sets and points and who knows what else. It all sounded like a bunch of hootenanny to me. But I listened real good, so I think I got the gist of it.

Volleyball Match, Volleyball Game, Ain’t That The Same?
Well, turns out a volleyball game and a volleyball match ain’t exactly the same thing. It’s like sayin’ a slice of pie is the same as the whole dang pie. One’s just a little piece of the other. See, a volleyball match is the whole shebang. It’s made up of these things called “games,” or sometimes they call ’em “sets.”
Now, a game, or a set, that’s just one part of the whole match. They play these games until one team gets to a certain number of points. Used to be, a game, or a set is 25 points, I heard. And you gotta win by two points, at least. So, like, if it’s 24 to 24, you gotta keep goin’ until somebody gets two points ahead.
And get this, the last game, they call it the “deciding set”, sometimes that only goes to 15 points. I don’t know why they gotta change it up like that, seems like it just makes things more confusing.
So, a match is like the whole enchilada. Usually they play best of three or best of five. Best of three means you gotta win two games, or two sets, out of three to win the whole match. Best of five, well, you gotta win three outta five. Makes sense, right?
How Long is a Volleyball Match?
Now, how long does this all take? Well, shoot, that depends. I heard somebody say a volleyball game usually takes ’bout 30 to 40 minutes. But that’s just one game. A whole volleyball match? That could take a good while longer. Depends on how many games they gotta play to figure out who’s the winner. If they gotta play all five games, well, you might be there a spell.
What’s a Set in Volleyball?
Okay, so we talked ’bout games and sets. They’re kinda the same thing, just different names. It’s like callin’ your grandma “Nana” or “Granny.” Same person, different name. So, a set, that’s just one part of the volleyball match where they’re battin’ that ball back and forth over the net.

Here’s how I think about it:
- Volleyball Match: The whole kit and caboodle.
- Volleyball Game or Set: One little part of the match.
- Points: How they keep score in each game.
So Many Rules in Volleyball!
They got all sorts of rules in this volleyball game, too. I heard ’em talkin’ ’bout somethin’ called “rotation.” Sounds like somethin’ you do with your tires, not a ball game. And they got all these lines on the court, and you can’t step over this one or that one. And you can only hit the ball so many times before it’s gotta go over the net. It’s a lot to keep track of!
Sometimes I just watch them play and don’t even bother with the rules. It’s fun to see ’em jumpin’ around and whacking that ball. They get all red-faced and sweaty. Reminds me of when we used to play baseball in the field behind the barn. We didn’t have no fancy net or lines, just a bat, a ball, and a whole lot of hollerin’.
Anyway, that’s what I know ’bout volleyball game or match. It’s a whole lot more complicated than it looks. But I guess that’s what makes it fun for those young folks. They like all them rules and whatnot. Me? I’d rather just sit back and watch ’em play. Maybe have a slice of pie while I’m at it.
I hope that cleared things up for ya. If not, well, you can always go ask one of them young’uns. They seem to know all about this volleyball stuff. Just be prepared for a whole lot of talk about sets and points and rotations and who knows what else. It can make your head spin!
But the gist of it is, the volleyball match is the big thing and it has some volleyball games or sets in it. And each game, each set, they gotta get to 25 points, ‘cept for that last one, maybe, then it’s 15. And you gotta win by 2, no matter what. It’s all just a lot of back and forth, if you ask me. But hey, whatever keeps ’em happy, right? Now, where’s my pie?
