Seiko 5 Sports Field: Should You Get One? We Break It Down!

Today, I wanna talk about my recent experience with the Seiko 5 Sports Field watch. I’ve been on the hunt for a new everyday watch for a while now. Something I could wear without worrying too much about it, but still looked decent, you know? I looked at a lot of different brands like Timex, Bertucci, Vaer, but I always came back to Seiko.

So, I finally pulled the trigger and got myself a Seiko 5 Sports Field SRPG31. It’s an automatic, which is pretty cool, no battery changes, I just need to wear it to keep it charged. I started wearing it right away, every day, all day. It’s comfortable on the wrist, not too heavy, and the size is just right for me.

One thing I noticed is that this watch is pretty tough. I mean, I’m not exactly gentle with my stuff, and this thing has taken a few knocks already. I was doing some yard work a few days ago, and I accidentally banged it against a fence post. I thought for sure I’d scratched it up, but nope, not a mark. It’s got this Diaflex mainspring thing, I guess that helps with durability. Oh, and it has a day/date thing, which is useful. I’m always forgetting what day it is.

I also started digging around a bit more about Seiko. Found out they have some really nice, more expensive watches, like these Grand Seikos. There’s one called Kiku Whirlpool that I really like the look of. I’m pretty new to this whole watch thing, but I think I’m becoming a bit of a Seiko fanboy.

The thing with these Seiko 5 Sports is that they’re pretty affordable. I mean, you’re getting a solid, automatic watch from a reputable brand, and you’re not breaking the bank. I’ve seen people online complaining that it doesn’t have a sapphire crystal like some more expensive watches, and that it’s a bit thick because of the display case back. Honestly, I don’t really mind. I like being able to see the movement doing its thing.

I also learned that you can’t really over-wind these watches, which is a relief. I was a bit worried about that at first. Apparently, even if you keep turning the crown after it’s fully wound, it won’t do any damage. That’s good to know, especially for someone like me who’s a bit clumsy.

Durable: Took a few hits already, still looks new.
Automatic: No battery changes, just wear it.
Day/Date: Helps me remember what day it is.

After wearing the Seiko 5 for a few weeks now, I’m really happy with it. It’s a solid watch that’s perfect for everyday wear. And I’m thinking, maybe down the line, if I save up a bit, I might treat myself to one of those fancy Grand Seikos. We’ll see, but it is great that Seiko provides options for various price points. But for now, this Seiko 5 is my go-to watch, and I’m loving it.
