So, I got this wild hair to check out the women’s volleyball gold medal match. I’ve always been a fan of the sport, but I’ve never actually made it to a big game like this, you know? I figured, why not now? It was in Paris, at the South Paris Arena 1, which sounded pretty fancy.

I did some quick searching on my phone to see who was playing. Turns out, it was Italy versus the United States. Italy was ranked number one, so I was expecting a good show. I packed a small bag, grabbed my passport, and booked a last-minute flight to Paris. I didn’t even book a hotel, I was that excited! I slept on the plane as it was a long haul for me, and when I landed, I took a cab straight to the arena.
When I got there, the atmosphere was electric. Fans from both sides were all decked out in their team colors, waving flags and chanting. I managed to snag a ticket from a guy outside – probably paid too much, but whatever, it was worth it. I found my seat and my jaw dropped, the arena was huge, and I had a pretty nice view.
The match started, and it was intense from the get-go. Italy was really dominating, just like the internet said they would. I was on the edge of my seat, yelling and cheering with everyone else. It was way more fun than watching it on TV. They smashed the US and won the Olympic gold medal!
- First Set: Italy came out strong.
- Second Set: The US put up a bit of a fight, but Italy was just too good.
- Third Set: Italy went for it and won the game!
After the match, the place went wild. The Italian players were jumping around, hugging, some were even crying. There was this one player, Monica De Gennaro, who was apparently at her fourth Olympics. I read later she was 37 and had never won gold before! Her teammates tossed her in the air. It was such a cool moment, everyone in the stadium felt how special this was. I felt so happy for them, especially Monica. It was her time! I was jumping up and down with everyone else. What a game!
Turns out, this win was a big deal for Italy. They’re only the seventh country to ever win gold in women’s volleyball at the Olympics. They joined some pretty elite company with the USSR, China, and Cuba. I mean, I knew they were good, but I didn’t realize it was that historic. Italy is now the seventh nation to hold Olympic gold medals among the women. They joined the former USSR (four), China (three), Cuba (three) and many others. So happy for Italy!
Honestly, the whole experience was a whirlwind. Flying to Paris on a whim, watching an epic match, and seeing history being made. It was one of the best spur-of-the-moment decisions I’ve ever made. I didn’t want the night to end, so I stuck around the arena, hoping to maybe see some of the players, but no such luck. I took a cab, finally booked a hotel, and slept like a baby.

The next day, I took the flight home, still buzzing from the match. I will never forget that experience. I might even make this a regular thing – flying to random places to watch sports. Who knows, maybe I’ll catch another historic moment. This experience really made my year. I even got a few pictures on my phone, which turned out pretty great. You can see how packed the stadium was. It’s something I’ll never forget. Definitely going to print these out!
